A place to explore and create art for teenagers.

In this studio, you’ll have a space to create your own art, be inspired by peers, and get advice and guidance when needed. Over 10 sessions, explore different media and find your voice.

Drawing: pencil, charcoal, and alternative mark-making

Painting: watercolour and acrylics

Printmaking: relief printing (woodcut, lino, collographs), etching, silk-screen

Object-making: basic clay work; working with found objects; papier mâché.

Saturday, 9.30 – 11.30 am. Fees:  $ 50 per class or  $ 450 for 10 class session.

Batik?

The Drawing Classes in September had fun using paint. I know I always say that my class is DRAWING and observation… but we always start by using a picture. The first step is understanding what medium was used for creating the artwork. And this time, I was using a well-loved postcard of a design by Singapore Batik artist Sarkazi Said Tze. The children were having difficulty finding out what medium was used. I used cues, such as “what are the colur of the lines for the edges?” but still, “Batik” didn’t come out as the answer (for the young ones… the 10 year olds got it instantly).

So, I decided I would give them a chance to try a “resist” technique. The children had to draw white -on-white with wax crayons (tricky!). Then, they used watercolour to fill in their shapes. The younger ones painted directly on unprepared paper, whereas I took time to gesso-prepare the paper for the older ones. Week I: June 27 – July 1 - Have fun with Watercolors

5-day exploration where you can pick up drawing tips, learn about colour and tame the watercolours on paper. An ideal medium for the summer as it is portable…

Week II: July 4 – July 8 - Learn Printmaking

Explore the various types of printmaking from relief printing to intaglio, using a real press, but also silk-screen-printing. Printmaking allows you to produces beautiful designs even without drawing skills, and there is an element of surprise in the result that you will never tire of marveling at…

 10,11,12 August (am) : Jungle Drawing

Animals in the Garden by Students (7 years old)

Introduction to drawing, on the theme of the jungle. Each half-day is divided into drawing time and craft time. We start with an introduction to drawing for beginners. The second half of each session is craft-time:

 Paint a canvas and silk-screen print your own design on a T-shirt

On the last day of camp, parents are invited to come in at 12.30pm, for an exhibition: it’s sharing time. The little artists get a chance to discuss their work (drawing, painting and silk-screen) with the visitors.

10, 11, 12 August (pm): Book-Making

Various small books made by myself.

During this camp, the participants get exposed to different ways of making a book, and assembling pages together. In parallel, children will learn to design and make their own stamps to illustrate their story. Finally, each participant will be encouraged to explore their own preferred book design to tell their story.

On the last day, the books will be exposed and stories shared. Parents are invited to come and view the exhibition and share the exhibited works from 5pm onwards.

Things to come… T-shirts, Sculptures, Cinema, Holiday Program (finally)!

T-shirts, silk-screen printed and ready to be decorated.

Many things are happening this month!

• I have prepared the T-shirts above for a private party. These were silk-screened using my usual paper-silk-screen technique. The design is simple and the girls will spend some time decorating them using a mixture of textile markers and sparkly liners… I’ll post the result!
• Another party at the Museum. Remember that you can book your own party at the Singapore Art Museum!
• Opening on the 7th of June is 2 and 1/2 D Cinema at the Playdome. Make sure you come and visit – you have until the 26th of June. Buy a ticket to one of the shows and get unlimited entry to the exhibitions on that day. Or buy a season ticket and come visit often!
• Summer Program: 

all happening at 102 Gardenia Road in Sunny Singapore, at the edge of the McRitchie Reservoir!

Week 1:

Monday 27 June – Friday 1 July  Watercolors For children 5-14 years old. Daily, 9.30 am – 12.30 pm. Beginners welcome. We will learn some basics of drawing as well as how to “tame” the watercolor.  

Max. 8 children. Fees: $400, includes material (watercolor paper and paints, brush, folder… to bring home).

Week 2:

Monday 4 July – Friday 8 July Printmaking For children 7-14 years old. Daily 9.30am – 12.30 pm. Beginners or advanced. Beginners will be exposed to various techniques of relief printing, silk-screen printing and intaglio, using a real press. Advanced students will be supervised and inspired in their chosen project.

Max. 5 children. Fees: $500, includes material (plates, printmaking paper, inks… and a folder to bring the art home).

Weekday or Week-end Adult Watercolour Classes

At the request of some of you, I have been planning a watercolour class for a while. Projects sometimes come in the way…
This time, the watercolour class FOR ADULT BEGINNERS will be held on:

Program: Experimental Watercolour.  Learn to mix colours using watercolours. Explore the medium, and understand how colours play with each other, an also how the paint works on the paper. A workshop for the beginner, there will be some guidance on drawing. We will paint abstract subjects first, then from graphics and the hopefully some landscape in Seletar (trees and houses).
